Rain House
This home is located in the tropical region of the Big Island that rains more than 140 inches per year. There’s a necessity for deep eaves and extensive breezeways which provide shelter from the elements while allowing mountain breezes and trade winds to flow through. The program of the house is arranged with bedrooms and living area separated into 2 blocks, forming a L shaped courtyard facing the best views of the property. The client also requested to have the main living area located on the 2nd floor to reduce humidity and frame the mountain views to the west. Large windows through out the home visually dissolve the boundary between the landscape and interior spaces.
